The National Educational Technology Standards requires that “teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments,” (Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer, 2010). “Teachers promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. They engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources,” “Teachers promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes and model collaborative knowledge, construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others,” (Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer, 2010).
Reflecting on the NETS Standards, My GAME Plan will be developed based on the standards Modeling Digital-Age Work and Learning and Engaging in Professional Growth and Leadership. Modeling and facilitating effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning,) In addition, participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning, (www.iste.org) .
G-(Set Goals): To implement new digital tools into the classroom to further engage my students in their learning. In addition, increase my knowledge of technological advances in order to better serve my students.
A- (Take Action): Working with my school’s technology integration specialist to gain further knowledge on the different types of digital tools that are being used and have yet to be introduced to my computer lab. Also, increase my knowledge in the technological advances by attending in-services, field trips, registering and attending business and technology conferences to gain knowledge and materials.
M- (Monitor): I will monitor my progress by using a journal/portfolio. In that, I can reflect on a daily basis as to what lesson was right, what was wrong, and what I can do to improve.
E-(Evaluate/Extend): I will evaluate my learning through principal observations and the technology specialist observations. Reading their feedback as well as seeing how the students implement the new tools, will determine whether or not it was successful. There is always room for improvement in all that we do. The GAME Plan is definitely a work in progress.
“Overall, when we set goals, tack action, monitor our learning, and evaluate your progress, you take control of your own learning process. Being a self-directed life-long learner, you will be able to respond to the rapid and continuous technological changes,”(Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer, 2010).

In the development of your GAME plan, I believe you have hit the nail on the head. Cennamo, Ross, and Ertmer describe the GAME plan as a strategy that “enables you to customize your approach to learning tasks, to develop relevant skills that are important to you, and prepares you for lifelong learning” (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009, p. 3-4). I think your plan meets all three characteristics. In my judgment, your action plan steps are strong and doable. I think the steps will fit well into the busy schedule all teachers have and help to accomplish your goal. Good job!

Hi Terri,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments. I was a little hesitant at first. I hope I am able to attend those business conferences. My school district has had major cuts and teachers attending conferences have been limited.
Farena,
ReplyDeleteI'm curious; what grade level/content area do you teach? How much technology do you currently integrate? Has it served you well?
I love that you pointed out that your GAME plan is a work in progress! That's definitely something we should all keep in mind! With technology, we have to realize that we'll never be "done" learning. Everything changes so quickly and so often, it is a never-ending process!

Hi Deana,
ReplyDeleteI am a middle school business education teacher. I teach 5th-8th grades. I teach computer literacy, keyboarding, and computer applications. My computer lab integrates technology on a daily basis. Being the lead technology teacher at my school, I try to find different ways to present information as well as implement new technology tools to continue to engage my students. As you stated, technology is changing everyday and that is why I say my GAME plan is a work in progress. Technology changes, standards change, as well as expectations. I just try my best to teach my standards in a way that my students can relate to them, understand them, apply them, as well as use those skills for the rest of their lives.

Farena,
ReplyDeleteTerrific GAME PLAN. I have been unsure what was required of this assignment but your blog has helped me.
I agree that we need to improve especially with all the new technologies plus Web 2.0 Tools that will enhance our teaching and engage our students.
Farena,
ReplyDeleteI like how you want to further advance the technology into your classroom. You have a wonderful GAME PLAN and something that I am trying to work on as well is to work on using technology to help the diversity of my classroom as well. Something that caught my attention was in our textbook and how mentions that we can have "linked material may incorporate may incorporate text, audio, or visual information that helps students with diverse learning preferences find support in a mode that they prefer"(Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2010, p.123).

Thanks Joy! I believe we never stop learning. With all the new technology out, we have to stay on top of things and learn all that we can.

Bryan,
ReplyDeleteUsing technology to help with the diversity of your classroom goes along with finding tools to cater to the individual learning styles we have in our classrooms. No one child learns the same. Everyone processes information differently. I think that learning the different technology tools, aids us in accomplishing that goal.

Farina,
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you want to further your knowledge of technological advancements! Is your school district supportive of your goals? Do they pay for conferences, in-services, field trips, substitutes etc so you can further this technological knowledge?
Sherry
Farena,
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting position to be in with the new technology changing every day!
You mentioned wanting to integrate new technologies into your classroom. Being a business education teacher, is there a specific technology that you've had your eye on to integrate?
Also, you mention journaling and reflection for yourself to monitor your progress towards your goals. Do you think that introducing reflective academic blogging to your students about the material you cover would help engage your students? You could tie it directly into GAME plans for students when thinking about their understanding and progress through your course topics.
Great post!
